From the Associate Director

What does it mean to be a successful founder? Over the past four years of operation, working with more than 100 founders, I’ve witnessed the type of success that is often valued: money raised, revenue generated, employees hired, products launched. Yet when I reflect on what makes Doman Innovation Studio special, and the work that makes me fired up to come in every day, the definition of success becomes deeper and richer.
Since the founding of the Studio, our focus has been on supporting and developing founders- taking proven coaching and behavioral science methods and applying them to the complexity of entrepreneurship. We know that when founders are aligned with their own process, when they see risk and opportunity differently, and when they step back and become curious, this leads to success- both in their current venture, and in whatever they pursue in the future.

In my own career, I’ve come to understand the importance of not only knowing what I want to do and where I want to work, but how I like to work- the processes, environment, and mentors that allow me to thrive. Through Doman Innovation Studio, I get to watch a similar journey happen for the founders I work with. I have seen our student founders graduate with operating ventures and a rich portfolio of experience they can take into job interviews and future opportunities.

I have seen researchers step into CEO roles, not only building their business skills but becoming leaders and mentors in the University ecosystem. I have seen community members build the confidence and traction in their ventures to step away from a 9-5 career, committing fully to their passion.

With each of the founders we support, we learn more about what success means, and how we can support and unlock a founder’s natural momentum. I am excited to continue this work in the coming year, creating a space where the innate creativity, innovation, and drive we see at the University of Utah becomes clear motion, adaptation, and the skills to build what’s next.
I am immensely grateful to our incredible Doman Innovation Studio team, our campus partners, and to Curt and Alisa Doman for their support that allows this work to happen.

Sincerely,

Sam Martinez
